Last Day

Tomorrow is my last day of high school.

Being at Barker for 10 years (since the beginning) is no mean feat. There have been so many fantastic experiences over the years. There have been so many friendships made, changed, and broken. There were the good times, and the bad times. And we’ve all been through it all. Together as one. As the Class of 2009.

Many of us have planned to do so much in these last few weeks. However in reality, only a fraction of these things have been done. For me, it is physically and mentally impossible to do what I had planned in the space of a week. There are so many people to thank, so many people to recognise and yes, so many people to hug.

Tomorrow will be filled with many emotions. I know that some of us, myself included, will get a bit teary. I think it’s normal though. School has made up a majority of our lives, in the grand scheme of things. It has dictated and directed many minutes of the days. It will be interesting to see how life progresses without this.

I still have so much more to say, but now I must rest.

Last Week

Tomorrow is the beginning of one of the most anticipated weeks in the year, the last week of school. Many months of hard work has gone into planning and expecting this. I think many of us are still trying to see how we will be after this week is over.

For all of us, 13 years of our short lives have been in school, a regulated sanctuary, and now it is time to go.

For me, I still don’t know what to think. I say, let’s enjoy it for now.

Luckily a week of events has been planned, and yes, there will be some coverage on my Flickr. Stay tuned.

Recognition Week!

This week is Recognition Week! I’m so excited!

This is the week where I am hoping to recognize everyone for what they have contributed to Year 12. The other main thing happening this week is the free hugs. So for those of you who don’t know, this is my initiative and and everything is done out of my goodwill.

This week also leads up to the Leaving Week, which is the week long celebration of the end of high school. Yay.

So for me, it’s time to recognise. Here I go!

PS: Sorry for the lack of posts recently. There is this thing called the HSC that I wand everyone else still has to do.

Announcing Recognition Week

At the time of writing, it is 68 days until Recognition Week.

Today, I am announcing Recognition Week. It is going to run from the 24th September to 1st October. It will be a week for me to thank everyone for their contribution to Year 12, 2009. I’m doing this, because everyone has done so much for me, and also to show how much everyone has contributed to the Year 12 group.

I’ll be doing a lot of things for everyone to benefit from. Probably the most ambitious act during the week, will be my aim to give a free hug to everyone over the course of the week. Those who accept, will get a small card from me, saying thanks and also to remember the time spent. Certain others will get larger cards, for those with more stuff to thank them for.

This will not be limited only to Barker Year 12, I invite anyone who I have met, whether it is for one minute, one day, or one year to receive this free gift.

While I’m almost at the end of a significant part of life, it is a great opportunity to reflect on the happenings of the last few years. They certainly have made a considerable impact on my life, which has flown on to others, and that is something to be thankful for.

I hope you approve!

Weeks 1 and 2

Well, the first two weeks of term 2 have passed. I have to say, that it hasn’t been as pressured as last term. Finally I have some free time on the weekend (at least that’s why I’m writing tonight). I’m glad that this time has been sufficient to plan how this term will unfold.

You know, I’ve been doing those KenKen puzzles that started to appear in the Sydney Morning Herald last week. They’re quite fun, and they also help with developing basic number theory. (Quick, 4 numbers between 1 and 6 that multiply to give 160!) Do these puzzles really make you smarter?

While my logic develops, my social is on the backburner. Though this next term is quiet, unfortunately it isn’t time to let my guard down. I think everyone wants to be able to fast-forward to some time in November, after the last exam. For now, can I suggest to get each milestone through, one at a time, and still feel good about it?

Here ends.

5 of 6 and the next week.

So, there it is. Five of six exams done. I must say, today’s Maths Extension 2 exam really took me to the limit. It was simply, really hard. That’s all. At least it’s over now, and I can enjoy the weekend. The last exam is Maths Extension 1, but really, that’s going to be easy compared to what it was today.

Alas, I don’t have an exciting weekend, again. The only thing that is ‘good’ is my dentist appointment. Other than that, I can’t think of anyone who has a free weekend. There is still three days of exams left, and then the holidays. Still, there is a lot to look forward to, as essentially this is the only “free” holiday; the next one is before trials, and the one after is before the HSC exam.

The other good thing is that I will be celebrating my 17th birthday very soon, 18 days at the time of writing. Still deciding what to do, but stay tuned, and do ask about what I do.

Now I need to try and sleep.

The Day Before the Day…

So, the day before school starts… How joyful.

I have effectively started school a week early due to the music camp that ran last Sunday for three days. Also, I was at school yesterday to help with orienting new people (and some small kids). Therefore, the getting up early has begun.

I really don’t know what to think about the time between this summer and the first term. Should it have been more fun, or more work?

But anyway, it’s all over. There is 10 months to go, and many hours of work. I hope for the best for me and everyone.

BTW, the title of this post is a song from Dido.

Skins: First Generation v Second Generation

After yesterday’s start to my ‘memory dump’, there has been some criticism to what I have written. That’s fine, but I thought I would clarify what I wrote.

When I said ‘voucher’ as a gift idea, it was only meant to be an idea, and not a solid decision.

Anyway, next topic.

Well, the third season of Skins is about to start airing on E4 this week. I’m sort of a fanatic, so I guess the reason I am writing this is because I want to share my analysis with someone, out there. So here goes.

(Most of the base information is from Wikipedia, which is distilled from the Skins website.)

Creator Jamie Brittain said that there were some similarities between the characters from each generation. Some of them are very clear.

Tony’s sister Effy is now the leader of her group of friends in season 3. Tony’s best friend is Sid. Effy’s best friend is Pandora. Sid and Pandora share a few traits, such as the need to lose their virginity as soon as possible. I think Pandora is a little bit less ‘in the know’, but we’ll just have to watch the series.

Freddie, JJ and Cook are three best friends. Their personalities make for a brilliant contrast. One is shy, but great with magic tricks, one is a weed-smoking skater and the other is charismatic and sociable. This friendship is similar to Maxxie, Anwar and Chris. Their personalities are reflected in other characters though. It will be interesting to see how these three will turn out throughout the series.

Thomas is polite and kind person. He has just emigrated from the DR Congo. He can be seen as similar to Anwar, as he is the character with the stand out characteristic. (Anwar’s characteristic is the fact he is Muslim)

New in season 3 are twins Katie and Emily. There is also a brother-sister relationship present; Karen is Freddie’s sister.

Those are the main similarities in season 3. I’m sure that it will be a great season, no matter what anyone said, yeah?

How I select birthday gifts for people

With my final year in high school and the HSC coming up, I decided I needed to clear my brain of all the loose thoughts that exist inside. So, here is the perfect place to write them all down. I’d really love some input to these, because I think there are some interesting topics out there.

Over the last year, (while I still had a job), I gave many birthday gifts out to people. Some were interesting, some were plain, but there was a common way that I picked these. I have only just worked it out now, so here goes.

First, I think of some characteristics for a particular person. Usually these are in the form of single words that describe them. They might be interesting facts about that person, say, their favourite colour. From this I generate one word or phrase on which to base my gift on.

Second, using the known characteristics and that word or phrase, I go out to the wide world and pick my gift to that person. This is where all the usual factors in selecting gifts come in, i.e. cost, size, nature, etc… Then comes the waiting time to that person’s birthday.

Third, I give the gift to the person and observe their reaction.

Let me demonstrate with an example.

Name: PS (Name changed for security)
Descriptors: Favourite colour green, light, smart, wants to be lazy after HSC, quiet…
One word or phrase: Inspiration
Gift idea: Something from a design studio, voucher

I won’t kill the surprise for this person by revealing what the gift is, but I hope you get the general idea of how I go about selecting gifts!

It is very hard…

Filed under: Forward Thinking — Tags: — Ben @ 2:38 pm

It is very hard to constantly produce content on the web. Writing blogs, updating flickr and the microblogs is something that needs effort and thinking through.

Tomorrow (30 Sep), I will be at Centennial Park chilling out for a day. There the creative juices will flow (hopefully) and there will be some stuff on flickr.

It’s the school holidays now.
